Arigato gozaimasu is the more formal and polite version of “Thank you”. It is used in professional settings, with people you don’t know well, or with those who are older or of higher social status.

Translation: Good morning


Usage: It is the most common morning greeting. Ohayō gozaimasu, is more formal and polite and can be used with senior people or someone you meet for the first time, while ohayō is casual and can be used with friends or family.


Tips: In formal situations, Japanese people typically bow when saying ‘ohayo gozaimasu’.



  1. Konnichiwa (こんにちは)

Translation: Hello


Usage: Konnichiwa is a common Japanese greeting. It translates to hello or good afternoon in English. It is typically used from late morning until the early evening.



  1. Hai (はい)

Translation: Yes


Usage: Hai is used to affirmatively answer a question, confirm something, or show agreement.


Tips: When saying hai (はい), people often nod their head up and down.



  1. Iie(いいえ)

Translation: No


Usage: Iie is used to negatively answer a question or express disagreement.


Tips: When saying iie (いいえ), people often shake their head from side to side.
